Welcome to the Gotts Surname Family History

This site is the Family Tree Database part of the Gotts website where you can see the trees of known Gotts families and search them for individuals. Please be aware that if you are looking at this part of the site on a phone you may be missing key links at the top of the screen and all the search information at the bottom. If so, I recommend you use a laptop or tablet.

The Main site has over 350 pages about Gottses, including:

  • Stories, origins of the name,
  • more detail on the early families,
  • the earliest known ancestors,
  • their service in the military

The third part of the website is the Wordpress Newsblog, with notes and short stories about people.

These other parts can be reached through the links on the top menu. There are also links back to here from these sites.

How to use this site

The really useful feature of this site is to search for Gottses and see if they are already in the known families. When you enter the name on the Search boxes at the top of the page, or the bar above the image, it will search across all the trees and give you a list of those Gottses who match your search and which tree they are in.

There are c 2600 entries in this part of the database, and another 2000 born more recently. If you are looking for someone living in 20th century and you can't find them here then contact me via the 'Contact Site Administrator' link at the top of the site and I will help. For further help follow the instructions at the bottom of the page which are visible during the Search.

BEST WAYS TO SEARCH

BEST WAYS TO SEARCH

‘Search’ box and under ‘Find’

You can Search by:

  • People (ie for individuals, only using their details)
  • Families eg husband/wife
  • Search the site which uses Google to search across this site.

Click on either Search box, then Advanced Search. This takes you to the main Search People Screen.

Enter the data you know, or to see everyone in all trees leave everything blank, click to see death & burial and spouse and then click on ‘Search’ box.

You now have an alphabetical list of people with their key details from across all trees. Click on any person and you see all the information about them.

If you click on Ancestors or Descendants you will be in their tree. You can navigate up and down it and see the key information.

You can print out that screen from the ‘Print’ button at the right hand side.

You can download and print out the Pedigree and Dependency charts.

The individual report for that person can also be downloaded and printed out. You are allowed to export that one record only by Gedcom.

If you would like more individuals, then please contact me.

MORE SEARCH TOOLS IN THE ‘FIND’ BOX

MORE SEARCH TOOLS IN THE ‘FIND’ BOX

Clicking on the Find button shows a dropdown menu with some useful search screens:

First Name and Surname take you to lists of these, which you can drill down on and select one to go to the Individual page.

Places can be great for finding where most people lived. Clicking on it takes you to the Place List at the highest level with the greatest numbers, often at a Country level. Clicking on one drills down to the next level, typically the County, then potentially the Place. It depends whether all locations have been set up with Place/County/Country referenced. If not, you may find the same place at different level, eg the same place at county level and below county level. These will be improved as the family trees develop.

If you can’t see as many people in a location as you expect, try starting a level up. Eg if you don’t see many entries for Gresham, start at Norfolk and drill down.

When you drill down at some level you will see a tiny magnifying glass Search symbol at the end of the place. Click on this to see all the events at this place. Clicking on the person takes you to the Individual’s Page.

Search Families – limited use

This search screen lets you search for married couples, not father/son combinations. When you click on Search you see a list of people meeting the criteria. Click on the Family ID on LHS to show more detail of the event. Click on the name of the person in bold to go to the Person screen where you can investigate the family as described above.
