Many sappers were not recovered from where they were buried in tunnels. It is a small comfort that Matthew and J Withey were both dug out. They were both buried in the ‘Norfolks’ cemetery at Becordel-Becourt. It is not far away from the front line, less than a kilometre to the west, the other side of the hill.
It is a peaceful place to be, on a quiet back road.
Matthew is buried next to J Withey who died in the tunnel with him.
