Richard David Gotts - Travelling Showman

Following a query from Trisha Jackson a while ago, two people found they were related to Richard David Gotts, with more children to the family. Derek Lloyd sent this wonderful photo of Richard's show. Derek thought that Richard may have used the showman's name of "Curly Saunders" or "Big Jim Sullivan". I have been able to identify that his mother's maiden name was Charlotte Sanders, so Curly Sanders or Saunders looks like the best fit.

He married Mary Ann Scott, and their children were:

Cecilia Florence, was born in 1908 in Newport, Wales. and had children in Newport and Pontypridd. Cecilia married William Henry Bournes in London in 1926 and emigrated.

Charlotte Eunice b 1913 married Albert Edward Greed, who changed his name to Greaves at some point (Details from David Greed & Ron Greed)

Violet May b 1905

Richard is not a common name for the period, and may have been born in 1875 in London. It is possible that he is in the 1881 census in Bethnal Green, son of George Gotts, painter from Reepham. (Tree #108, yet to be written up)

He seems to have avoided the censuses for 1891 and 1901, so it is hard to pinpoint his age.

Ian Cowan noted that Richard's brother Edward also adopted the surname Sanders when he emigrated to Australia - legend has it the father was "not a nice man" so they took on the mothers name.

Thanks to Trisha Jackson, Derek Lloyd, David Greed, Ron Sadler and Ian Cowan

Top left is Curly, to the right of him is Cecilia dressed up as Omdoza.

At bottom right is either Mary or Lou. Louisa was Richard’s sister, and her act was to have paving slabs smashed on her chest, causing her problems in later life.
