Which trees can be analysed using DNA?

Here’s a list of the trees that can be analysed by Y-DNA. It would be obvious to think that families living close to each other would be connected, but we haven’t found any documents to confirm this, but DNA testing might just show it.

The minimum needed to test the DNA is for one male with direct lineage back to the earliest known male. To verify there are no NPEs (see below) it is useful to add a second participant who descends from a different son of the earliest male.

So far there are 12 trees where there are direct male descendants known about, and another 6 where the trees have not been populated to current day members to establish of there are living male descendants.

Non-Paternity Events (NPE) are where the male Y-DNA would not be passed down the family, which would break the direct male line. Usually, this is due to illegitimate births where the sons have kept the name Gotts, where they would have the father’s DNA not Gotts DNA. Also adoptions are another reason, but this information may not be known to living descendants.
