Gotts Surname Family History
131 - 5 Henry and two wives
We can’t find Henry in 1880 census, but:
1885 census, we find Henry living with Arvilla (Templeton), though we can’t find a marriage. This is Arkansas City in Kansas, where we know Henry was around that time. It is the right age, occupation and place, so must be Henry from Ohio and Germany.
When we look at the children listed, it is not clear which ones are Henry’s:
- Mabel 4992: Was Henry with Arvilla from 1877-8 when Mabel would be conceived? We think not. When you look at the 1880 census for Arvilla, living with her is Mabel Mulley aged 3. What is not clear is whether she is the daughter of Arvilla aged 19 or her sisters or brothers, but in 1885 she is being looked after by Arvilla.
- Frank 4923 born 1881 in Kansas, married Mary S Taylor in 1910 in Bartlesville, Osage, Oklahoma but died in 1913 electrocuted while working at the Dewey Portland Cement plant. They had two children, Sidney Taylor b 1904 and daughter Veda M 4926 in 1909 in Oklahoma.
- Bertha, b 1884 Kansas. She married William Dunn in 1901 in Kansas, and then Bert Faucett in 1912 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- From later census we also know of Richard Ray 4921 Gotts b 1887 Kansas. Richard’s draft card for WW1 is shown below:
Henry Gotts & Linda Gould
There is a record of the marriage of a Henry Gotts to Linda Gould on 1 Sept 1874 by licence in Cuyahoga, so presumably in East Cleveland. The name on the application and the marriage cert is for Linda, but the margin note says Louisa!
There is no other information about Linda, except a second marriage as Linda Gotts in 1880 to Mark Burner. There are no other Linda Gottses, nor records of a Linda, so we can only presume that Linda believes her husband to be dead or decides to portray him as such.
