John 556 Gotts - Excise Officer (#071) 1798 Watford and 1832 Uxbridge
There is a record in Ancestry for 1798 for Messrs Cropthwaite and Gotts who own a house tenanted by Excise officers at Leavesden, near Watford. This stacks up with John 556 who moved to Watford Ride in 1797.
Also in 1832 in Uxbridge John Gott (sic) is the proprietor of a property and the tenant is listed as Excise officer. John senior was an officer in Uxbridge, though by 1865 he would be aged 65.
Presumably John owned the house and rented it out as a source of income.
This is a book of Excise tables published by John and advertised in the Times newspaper in 1789.
