Migration in 1860-1880s

This family is a simple example of the way families were breaking up and moving out of Norfolk. This map shows where many of the grandchildren of George 101 moved. Other families also went North, as well as to the Lancashire cotton mills, overseas to USA, Canada, Australia & New Zealand.

• James 130 went to Scarborough and Thornton-le-Dale, Yorkshire with the mining and smelting of iron.
• Sarah Maria 132 followed her sisters Mary Ann 141 and Elizabeth 131 to the North Yorkshire moors. Both sisters married gamekeepers so they moved around the country.
• William 124 retired to Gateshead to his son Samuel's 1202 to live. Samuel was a seaman, so presumably working out of Newcastle.
• Hannah 113 left her husband in Norfolk and took her family to Kingston-upon-Hull. It had become a major port with canals connecting it to the Potteries, saving shipment times to Europe. Many of Hannah’s family were seamen, including Thomas 1865.
• George 117 & Mary Neave took their family to Easington, Durham by 1871. He was a labourer then coal miner.
• George’s younger brother Boaz 153, after losing 10 out of 12 children and his first wife, took his family north to Seaham Harbour, (with Dawdon coal pit providing much work).  In 1881 he is listed as a labourer, and also ran the Methodist Sunday School.
• Their brother Samuel 155 emigrated to Ridgeway, in New York County, to join his cousins George 134, Mary Ann 137, Thomas 136 where they farmed the wheat plains by Lake Ontario.
• George 163 married in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1873, and was a coal miner in  Newcastle in1881 then at Seaton Delaval towards the coast.
• Lastly, Thomas 1449 became a teacher in Bangor, North Wales.
