Using this logic the only John Witting/Witton that can be located in the vicinity is that of John Witting born in Edgefield in 09/03/1772. I have therefore concluded that he is the father of Mary’s child John.
Although we will never be able to actually prove who the father of John Gotts Witton was, we have a clear and provable link. The lady who responded to my mail shot had been researching Gotts/Witton for a while and she has provided me with a copy of the voting records for 1802 which clearly states that a John Witting owned the house in Cromer that Thomas Gotts and his wife Sarah lived in. John Witting was the innkeeper (hotelier) of the Wellington Inn in Cromer. Mary probably worked at the inn.”
Many thanks to Cynthia Nisbet and Robert Gotts for the update for this tree.
This website notes that John Witting was bankrupt in 1817 and the inn was sold. His son John was also landlord of the Ship Inn in Cromer.
John 2453 Gotts alias Witton was born in Gresham, either 1794 or 1799. Their son John's baptism record states his parents as John & Mary Gotts alias Witton. John's wife is Mary Ann Louger, whom he married in 1821 in Gresham. John appears as Witton in 1851 in W Beckham, but Mary Witton is in W Beckham as a widow. There's a John & Mary in 1861 and 1871 with similar birthplaces, but different ages.
Their children use both Witton and Gotts names, were born in Gresham and include:
John 2453 appears in the court records as part of the ‘Swing Riots’ in 1831.
Another John Witton alias Gotts, probably his grandson was in court in 1903 for other reasons. Click here for details
Sarah Ann 2457 married Daniel Pyke in Gresham in 1855. She appears in the 1851 census as Sarah Ann Witton! Sarah had a son Robert in 1851, but his birth certificate does not show his father. Robert (Robert John Pigott 769) appears in the 1871 census shown as 'Wife's son',with Daniel and Sarah, wife their other son Samuel Pike.
